Memorial day was spent at Grandpa Nugent’s house. Here are some photos of the day:

Alec is ready to jump in and get the party started.

Get in. The water’s fine. It’s not cold. I’m not shivering…

Don’t fall in!

This was before the swimming. Alec wanted to be sure to show off his hops first.

Aunt Aly and Lily, The Siobhan Girls!

Alec & Claire are learning the game Cornhole. Why, because they are so competitive!

Grandpa shows off his Cornhole skills

Claire does her nightime trampoline jumping

Janet Napolitano Flying Coach May 24, 2008

I was recently in Chicago, IL at the Medical Librarian Association’s annual conference. When leaving for Phoenix and waiting to board my plane, I saw Arizona Governor, Janet Napolitano come out of the gate. Pretty cool! I overheard her entourage making comments about her flying coach. I initially thought, wow, that’s great that she is conscientious of Arizona’s budget crisis and respects the economic pinch everyone is feeling. I admire the fact that she was willing to sacrifice her comfort to save some pennies. But, then I started to think, does she always do this, even when there is no budget crunch? Was first-class just not available? I know government officials in the past have been criticized for taking extravagant “pleasure trips” at taxpayers expense. Now, Janet was definitely there on business, and as fun as Chicago is, it isn’t a getaway tropical vacation. She was there for some panel discussion from what I overheard. I wonder how often government officials skip the whole price thing and just book the first-class because they are important, powerful, and think they deserve it. I would like to hope that Janet made this choice of flying coach because she is cost sensitive and respects Arizona taxpayers. If this is true, thank you and we appreciate it. Of course, she should feel free to purchase her own upgrade or use frequent flyer miles, but if she truly does respect us Arizonans, please continue to set the example to other government officials of thrifty and resourceful behavior by flying coach everywhere you go. Just an observation of a Queen Creek, AZ citizen.

The title of Alec & Claire’s favorite book is a mouthful to say. But, try saying it while eating ice cream!
Our evening routine consists of reading books and playing, The Thinking Game. This game is where dad starts off by saying, “I’m thinking that my favorite blank (i.e. Color) is…” Then Alec & Claire share their favorite blank… Reading is a lot of fun for them. My favorite book as a child is a Dr. Seuss book called, “Hands, Hands, Fingers, Thumb.” We all have a favorite childhood story, what’s yours?

It was a nice weekend! Alec and I went camping near Payson at a campsite called “Preacher’s Canyon.” We went with our ward (Rittenhouse Ward) as it was the ”Father’s and Sons” or Aaronic Priesthood Commemoration campout. It’s about 8 miles east of Payson, AZ. The weather was awesome, a nice escape from the mid 90 degree weather in Phoenix. This was the first time I have taken Alec camping. He did really well and had a blast. We also found out that Alec does not like smores. Yuck! He was so excited the whole trip about making them and I guess it was a big let down for him when he actually tried it. Oh well, I ate my share plus his. Yummy!
Alec was one of the younger boys there, but he made friends with a group of 5-7 year olds and had fun running all around the campsite, exploring the woods, and even climbing trees. Although that tired him out, we didn’t go to bed until 11pm.
Of course, I wasn’t able to sleep in for the morning as Alec is used to waking us up. Never later than 7am, but usually between 6 and 6:30am. Doesn’t ever matter when he goes to bed, gauranteed to be up early. This morning was no different. I was cold, tired, and missed my bed. Just another hour of sleep please! Alec insisted and we were one of the first one’s up. Fortunately, someone else beat us and had woken up and started the fire.
Breakfast was provided by the young men of our ward and they did a fine job. Dutch oven cooked biscuits and gravy. Also on the side, sausage and bacon. Delicious! With our bellies full we decided to explore the creek that was nearby. Alec will tell you this was his favorite and most disliked thing we did while camping. He loved seeing spiders, insects, roly pollies, and throwing rocks into the creek. But, every campout has to have some dramatic event, or at least dramatic according to Alec.
Alec’s memorable moment was falling in the creek. Brrr! That creek was cold! Luckily I was prepared and packed Alec some extra clothes. Okay, Melissa was prepared and packed Alec extra clothes. Got him into some warm, clean clothes and he was ready to do it again. Great trip, and only about an hour and a half away to get to some nice wooded camping areas.
